Founded in 1937, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) embarked on a mission to electrify the rural areas of Maryland. With an initial loan of $165,000, SMEC constructed 175 miles of line, serving 600 customer-members.
Over the years, the cooperative has seen leadership under five general managers and has grown exponentially. As of January 2020, SMEC boasts of serving 165,000 customers, making it one of the largest electric cooperatives in the country.
SMEC’s commitment to its community is evident in its extensive service areas, covering all of Charles and St. Mary’s counties, the southern part of Prince George’s County, and a significant portion of Calvert County.
